I think it was a trap.

It was the most primitive type of trap, one that dug a hole and placed some dirt on top.

However, this trap seemed to be a little bit more clever, because this "virtual earth" was made from floor, or "virtual floor".

The only reason we didn't step on it before was because the "virtual floor" was located right at the base of the wall
