C12 What Kind of Number Plate Do You Want?

The Golden Ruyi Auction House was a venerable institution in Traessey, boasting a history even more extensive than that of the Lee family!

Their inventory was impressively comprehensive, with pills being just one of the many items on offer.

She was frustrated with his careless attitude towards his future, gobbling up pills without a second thought. She planned to open his eyes to the stark price difference between pills with forty percent efficacy and those with inferior quality. Surely, he would then realize the folly of his ways, consuming pills haphazardly to enhance his cultivation. The adage 'you get what you pay for' must make sense to him, right?

"A member's red ticket for the Golden Ruyi Auction House?"

Chen Xing wore a peculiar look on his face.

"Yes, it was quite a feat to obtain it. Are you coming or not? If not, I'll offer it to someone else."

Luo Shuining dangled the ticket before his eyes.

"Er... better not."

He felt awkward about the highest-tier amethyst membership card for the Golden Ruyi Auction House that was still tucked away in his pocket.

What's more, he had requested that Alchemist Lu Ming expedite the auction of his two pills. It was highly probable that his own pills would be featured at this very auction.

He needed to slip into something more appropriate to go and collect his earnings!

"What?" Luo Shuining's breath caught, and her complexion soured instantly. She had extended her kindness to him, and he had the audacity to decline? He was oblivious to the privilege of attending one of Traessey's largest auction houses, let alone the rare chance to accompany her. How could he so readily turn her down?

Luo Shuining's self-esteem was on the line!

"You're not getting out of this! You must come! That's an order from your class monitor!"

Luo Shuining closed the distance in a flash, thrusting the ticket into his hand.

Chen Xing was momentarily taken aback by the sudden waft of her perfume, and before he knew it, the red ticket was in his grasp.

"..."

Now what?

Was this temptation or coercion using the authority of the class monitor?

"Fine, I'll go."

Chen Xing exhaled resignedly, conceding to his classmate's wishes.

...

The assessment was over.

It was now midday, and the students dispersed to grab lunch.

The atmosphere was charged with excitement, as most students wore eager expressions on their faces. After all, the afternoon following the assessments meant no classes!

Chen Xing excused himself to grab a bite to eat and headed home to pick up his gear. If he had his own pills, he could later seize the chance to exchange them for cash.

Meanwhile, Luo Shuining had finished her meal in the school cafeteria and was waiting for him at the entrance. She wasn't alone; two or three other students were with her.

"Why hasn't this guy shown up yet?" Luo Shuining's brows knit together in slight irritation. She had finished eating quite a while ago, and there was still no sign of him.

The thought of him outright rejecting her invitation earlier made her blood boil.

"Exactly. Who does he think he is, keeping our Miss Luo waiting?" quipped a girl standing beside her, arms crossed and a playful smile on her lips. Though her features didn't quite match Luo Shuining's, she carried an air of nobility and a certain allure.

"Seriously, Shuining, who is this guy?" asked a man next to the girl, standing tall and straight as a bamboo shoot, his head tilted back with a faint air of superiority. He couldn't fathom anyone worth waiting this long for.

"He's a classmate, my desk mate," Luo Shuining replied.

"Desk mate? Male or female? Is he good-looking? How does he stack up against our Senior Yinghao?" The girl with the noble demeanor was visibly intrigued. Starfall Academy was a breeding ground for talent, and she was eager to see how someone who had caught Luo Shuining's attention measured up.

"He's a guy. Not particularly handsome, just likes to act the part. He's no match for Senior Yinghao, of course."

Luo Shuining pursed her lips. To be honest, Chen Xing wasn't bad-looking, especially with the recent change in his aura. But his infamous reputation at Starfall Academy, particularly his roguish gaze, had left a strong initial impression on her.

But even with a change in demeanor, he wasn't what she'd call handsome!

Remembering the way he had declined her invitation made her mentally dock points from him.

Mao Yinghao, hearing Luo Shuining's assessment, let out a light laugh and lifted his chin proudly. Her response was exactly what he had anticipated.

Pang Qing couldn't help but laugh beside him. "You're joking, right? When it comes to good looks, who can hold a candle to our Yinghao? The dashing young gentleman of Starfall Academy—what girl there doesn't know him?"

"Class president, I'm here."

Chen Xing waved to Luo Shuining from a distance. On his way, he intentionally avoided using Windstride, thinking that perhaps Luo Shuining would grow impatient and leave. To his surprise, she had actually waited for him the entire time.

"Is that him? The desk mate you mentioned, Chen Xing?" A girl of evident wealth asked, sizing him up with a curious glance. Chen Xing certainly had a pleasant appearance and wasn't poorly dressed, but there was nothing particularly outstanding about him.

He might have some charm for the unassuming wildflowers by the roadside, but among her acquaintances, such young masters were a dime a dozen. Observing his flippant greeting, she noted his lack of proper etiquette. In her eyes, he was decidedly subpar compared to Mao Yinghao.

"Yes, that's him. Let's get going. The auction is about to start."

Luo Shuining nodded and motioned for him to follow.

However, just as Chen Xing took a couple of steps, a tall figure stepped between him and Luo Shuining, casting him a dismissive glance.

"One should be aware of their place. If you're late, you ought to follow behind with a sense of remorse, not burden your class president with more trouble!"

"???"

Chen Xing was completely baffled. What was this guy's deal? His self-importance was through the roof!

Such an air of superiority was quite unsettling!

Chen Xing sidestepped to Luo Shuining's other side and murmured into her ear, "Class president, who is this guy? Isn't this auction meant to be just between you and me? Why is this outsider butting in?"

Though they were not close, their intimate manner suggested they were sharing secrets.

And even though their voices were low, those nearby could hear their exchange clearly.

Mao Yinghao's gaze abruptly hardened, and a fierce light erupted from his eyes. In a swift motion, a tremendous gravitational force bore down on Chen Xing, making every article of clothing feel as if it were made of iron, unbearably heavy.

This was the legacy martial skill of the Mao family.

Mystic Gravity Divine Palm!

At the ninth stage of Body Tempering, a practitioner just a step away from the Guide Spirit Realm executed the Mystic Gravity Divine Palm!

Though he hadn't unleashed his full power, the elegant woman and Pang Qing seemed to already envision the unfortunate Chen Xing being utterly immobilized by the crushing gravity, his face involuntarily taking the brunt of the blow.

Mao Yinghao was a standout at Starfall Academy, and his Mystic Gravity Divine Palm was a martial skill of the Vastitas level! The Ma family had used this technique to topple countless foes, earning the position of City Protector General in the Purple Wind Empire. They were effectively the second most powerful in the empire, and the force behind this palm strike was beyond what an average person could contend with.

However, Chen Xing narrowed his eyes, and a pale blue light radiated from him, transforming into a mist of blue vapor. In that moment, he wasn't moving by his own volition but was propelled closer to Luo Shuining by the gentle push of the vapor, effortlessly breaking free from Mao Yinghao's gravitational hold.

It looked as though Chen Xing had haphazardly exerted his power, accidentally using Luo Shuining as a human shield, making Mao Yinghao hesitate to strike with full force.

How utterly graceless!

The distinguished lady scowled, her expression one of contempt as she completely lost interest in him.

"Enough already, Senior Yinghao. There's no need to bother with him. He's always like this at school. I'll deal with him when we get back," Luo Shuining intervened, trying to smooth things over. She had sensed something was off when she heard Mao Yinghao's earlier comment, and now her premonition had come true. This guy's audacity wasn't always a good thing!

She then shot Chen Xing a warning glance, thankful that he had at least maintained some decorum by not making any inappropriate contact as he leaned on her. Otherwise, she would have drawn her sword and taught him a stern lesson right then and there!

"The ticket I gave you was hard-won from Senior Yinghao. Please, just behave and don't make a scene. The auction is our main focus."

Luo Shuining murmured to Chen Xing, her voice a gentle whisper by his ear.

No one caught her whispered words.

Mao Yinghao's face contorted with displeasure. The audacity of that kid, whispering to the woman he fancied right in front of him! Twice!

Had Luo Shuining not been there to shield him, Mao Yinghao would have seized the moment to show this upstart the true meaning of 'death'!

Luo Shuining asking someone for a ticket on her behalf?

Chen Xing was momentarily taken aback, then shook his head with a resigned smile. Ah, the world has undergone countless changes over a hundred thousand years, yet my dragon-like allure remains constant, always drawing a throng of female dragons or women in my wake.

Such a curse!

...

In Traessey City, at the Golden Ruyi Auction House.

Mao Yinghao entered with his hands clasped behind him.

The hostess at his side bowed deeply, "Welcome, Young Master Mao."

As the son of the Purple Wind Empire's general, his presence alone was his credential, rendering any card or ticket superfluous.

Luo Shuining, on the other hand, presented a blue card and entered alongside Mao Yinghao.

A blue card membership ranked just below the red, but with a red card holder's patronage, she could be elevated to sit at the same level—a privilege reserved for red card holders.

"Miss Luo remains as radiant as ever."

A blush crept across Luo Shuining's cheeks as she modestly entered.

"Here are your seat numbers, Young Master Mao and Miss Luo." A woman offered them a number plate with reverence. Chen Xing did a double-take—it was Qin Fei, the same woman from the auction house the other day, now a familiar face.

Following them, Pang Qing and the aristocratic lady entered. Both were blue card members, yet Qin Fei treated them with utmost respect, clearly recognizing them.

Being a blue card member wasn't particularly prestigious, suggesting Luo Shuining's status was more significant than her unassuming demeanor let on.

Chen Xing's turn came, and he produced the wrinkled red ticket from his pocket, passing it to Qin Fei.

After inspecting it, she welcomed him with a courteous smile.

"What, no seat number for me?" Chen Xing asked, momentarily puzzled.

"Why would a servant need a number plate?"

Mao Yinghao snorted coldly, casting a dismissive glance in his direction.
