C16 The Treasure Chest Was Unlocked

Despite their efforts, the man of silence and his companions couldn't stop the trench coat man's relentless dagger. As a long-ranged Mage, the man of silence found himself increasingly unable to fend off the trench coat man's assaults, with the blade drawing perilously close to his neck. In the nick of time, he was enveloped by a golden light, rendering the trench coat man's dagger ineffective. From a distance, Landry's hand shimmered with a golden hue, revealing that he was the architect of this protective barrier. For the first time, a look of gratitude flickered in the man of silence's eyes.

With the golden light barrier shielding him, the man of silence managed to fight while retreating, eventually making his way to Landry's side. It was then that the trench coat man exchanged a knowing glance with the shirt man before vanishing from sight.

The shirt man's aggression intensified, and just when Matthew anticipated another attack from the trench coat man, the shirt man abruptly withdrew and sprinted into the distance. It became clear that the trench coat man's glance had been a signal to retreat, recognizing that the combatants were evenly matched and that, as a red name player, further confrontation would only work against him. Thus, he chose to retreat decisively.

As their adversaries withdrew, Matthew and his companions made no move to pursue. Both the man of silence and Landry had sustained injuries, and Matthew lacked the strength for further combat. They remained stationary, and after a considerable pause, Matthew exhaled a sigh of relief. He retracted Athena and Tyler, whose energies were nearly depleted from the battle and were on the verge of vanishing. Landry sheathed his large saber and approached Matthew and the man of silence with a smile, boasting, "How about that? Impressive, right?"

"Nice teamwork," the man of silence acknowledged, finally lowering his guard. The trio, battered and weary, made their way back to the manor.

Landry found himself accommodations within the manor, close to where Matthew and the man of silence were staying, as they had agreed to collaborate. The man of silence and Matthew were intent on swiftly completing their missions in the area before rendezvousing with Tina and the others. Communication with friends was impossible within the Mysterious Realm, but they were confident that Tina, with her abilities, had already finished her tasks. This belief in Tina's capabilities was something the man of silence conveyed to Matthew, though he couldn't quite explain his unwavering faith in her strength.

Landry was once a key figure in a team, but due to certain circumstances, the team disbanded, leaving him to fend for himself. However, his heroic nature and strong build made him better suited as a tank within a team. It was clear that the man of silence was keen on bringing Landry into his fold.

The following day, Matthew and his two companions arrived at the tower to complete their mission.

"Adventurers, welcome back. I've noticed that the menacing presence of the Wild Dog Pack nearby has vanished. Thank you for your significant contribution to Gourault Manor. Here is your reward," Greenwald said with a hint of excitement.

"Ding! Mission: Destroy the Wild Dog Pack complete. As a distinguished gold card holder, you've earned an additional treasure chest. Please check it out later." Matthew's system alert gave him a jolt of excitement; his advantage had paid off.

He eagerly examined the treasure chest:

Item Name: Mysterious Treasure Chest

Use: Receive a mysterious reward

Note: This item appears only under specific conditions and holds endless possibilities. Good luck.

"Adventurers, please take some time to rest. When the moment is right, I hope you can offer your help once more," Greenwald said, indicating there was no immediate follow-up mission.

The man of silence remained quiet, offering only brief courtesies before departing with Matthew, whose thoughts were wholly consumed by the treasure chest. He coveted Landry's machete and the man of silence's bow and arrow. If only he could draw a weapon card as well. The description of the mysterious treasure chest was so enticing; surely, it was possible. Matthew indulged in his silent daydreams.

Back at his lodging, Matthew took three deep breaths and opened the treasure chest.

"Congratulations, you've received 3 Hero Cards, 1 weapon card, and 1 treasure card."

The Hero Cards included a purple-quality Monkey and Zhuge Liang, and a blue-quality Aphaea. The Hero Cards alone were enough to thrill Matthew.

But the weapon card left him breathless.

Card Name: Red Flame Battleaxe

Category: Weapon Card

Quality: Blue

Weapon Level: Level 1

Use: Summon the Red Flame Battleaxe up to three times per day.

Note: The dual-wield battleaxe boasts a unique combat prowess, its formidable power instilling fear in the hearts of enemies.

The discovery of the treasure card caught Matthew by surprise. The golden light barrier that Landry had used was thanks to the treasure card. However, as a single-use item, Landry had made a significant sacrifice. The man of silence was clearly aware of this, which led to his complete turnaround in attitude toward Landry. The treasure card Matthew had was a healing type.

Card Name: ‘Eternal Regret’

Category: Treasure Card

Quality: Blue

Usage: Restores 700 HP to a designated individual nearby. Limited to one use.

Note: This is a large-scale healing card. Players must time its release accurately to reverse the course of battle.

Matthew's luck held strong as he acquired a treasure chest after just one phase of the mission. Upon opening the chest, he noticed that there were no updates to the main quest line. The man of silence, however, didn't seem concerned. Noticing Matthew's confusion, he explained, "Kraft just informed me that Greenwald has been troubled lately. I suspect he'll be seeking our assistance shortly. Completing this minor task should grant us passage to the Imperial City." It appeared he had everything under control, so Matthew's worries dissipated. He eagerly shared the details of his newfound loot with the man of silence, oblivious to the man's envious gaze.

After two tranquil days, just as the man of silence began to question his own predictions, they received a summons from Greenwald.

Landry was also summoned, having apparently become quite acquainted with the manor's owner.

"Adventurers, Gourault Manor is currently facing a grave danger, and we are in need of your assistance," Greenwald stated, looking somewhat exhausted as he got straight to the point.

"Absolutely, we're at your service!" Matthew and his companions responded in harmony.

"I'm deeply grateful. Here's the situation," Greenwald began, detailing his predicament. "Originally, our manor didn't have many inhabitants. However, due to turmoil in the east, many refugees without a home sought our aid, and we welcomed them. The issue is that our land isn't vast. While we have room to house the people, we're short on food. We've been depending on nearby towns for sustenance, but recently, bandits have started ambushing the route. Merchants and those of us going to purchase supplies have been robbed. Manor warriors who attempted to eliminate the bandits have all failed to return. We're now running low on food. Could you assist us in taking down these bandits?"
